Farmers face high stress and isolation. Learn the warning signs, practical ways to help, and five trusted charities that support farmer mental health across the United States.

Introduction: A Quiet Emergency in Rural America

Farming feeds the country, but it also takes a heavy toll on mental health. Long hours, market swings, debt, isolation, and the pressure to carry on a family legacy can push stress to the breaking point. When disasters strike, such as droughts or floods, the stakes rise again. It is no surprise that farmers and agricultural workers face elevated suicide risk compared to the general population. This is a quiet emergency that affects families, local economies, and the stability of our food system.

The good news is that there is real help available. Community members, agribusinesses, health systems, and policy makers can all play a role. In this guide, you will find the most common stressors and warning signs, practical steps anyone can take, and five proven organizations you can support right now. All links below go directly to the official websites of each charity. There are no referral tags.

If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, call 911. In the United States, you can reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by dialing 988 or visiting https://988lifeline.org. Support is available 24/7.

Why Farmers Are at Higher Risk

1. Financial pressure and debt

Volatile commodity prices, rising input costs, equipment loans, and thin margins can create chronic financial stress. A single bad season can ripple through a balance sheet for years. Financial strain is a strong risk factor for depression and anxiety, especially when it threatens the future of a family farm.

2. Isolation and workload

Many farmers live miles from neighbors and health services. Planting and harvest seasons often mean 12 to 16 hour days, seven days a week. That schedule leaves little time to connect with friends or seek care. Isolation can turn manageable stress into a crisis.

3. Unpredictable weather and disasters

Drought, floods, wildfires, and extreme storms can wipe out crops or herds with little warning. Climate change increases both the frequency and severity of these events. Rebuilding takes time, money, and energy that many do not have.

4. Stigma and cultural barriers

Farm culture often values toughness and self reliance. Many farmers worry that talking about depression or asking for help will be seen as weakness. That stigma delays care, even when symptoms are serious.

5. Access to care

Rural counties often have few mental health professionals. Long distances, limited broadband, and insurance gaps can make appointments difficult. Telehealth is improving access, but it is not a complete solution.

Warning Signs to Watch For

Not everyone shows the same signs, but these are common red flags. If you recognize several of these, reach out, listen without judgment, and connect the person to help.

Talking about feeling hopeless or being a burden

Withdrawing from family, friends, or farm groups

Changes in sleep, appetite, or energy

Increased use of alcohol or drugs

Giving away equipment or making sudden legal or financial changes

Neglecting animals or fields in ways that are out of character

Risk taking or talk about suicide

What to say: “I care about you. I have noticed you are under a lot of stress. You are not alone, and help is available. Can we call 988 together or set up an appointment with a counselor?”

Practical Steps Anyone Can Take

For family and friends

Check in often during planting and harvest seasons.

Offer specific help, such as childcare, a meal, or help with paperwork.

Learn the warning signs and keep the 988 number handy.

Encourage breaks and sleep. Rest protects judgment and safety during long days.

For farmers and ranchers

Schedule routine checkups with a primary care provider. Talk about stress openly.

Build a simple crisis plan: who to call, where to go, and what to do in an emergency.

Use peer support groups or extension programs when available.

Practice small daily resets: movement, hydration, and a short walk between tasks.

For agribusinesses, lenders, and cooperatives

Train staff in mental health first aid.

Share local resources on invoices, newsletters, and websites.

Offer flexible payment plans after disasters or market shocks.

For community leaders and schools

Host farm stress workshops at county fairs and grange halls.

Promote telehealth hubs at libraries and clinics.

Include resilience education in FFA and 4‑H programs.

Five Trusted Organizations You Can Support

Every organization below offers farmer specific resources. Links go directly to each official site.

1. Farm Aid

Website: https://www.farmaid.org/

Farm Aid was founded in 1985 by Willie Nelson, Neil Young, and John Mellencamp to keep family farmers on the land. The annual Farm Aid concert raises funds and awareness, but the organization works every day through its Farmer Hotline and resource network. Staff connect farmers to financial counseling, disaster support, legal help, and mental health care. Farm Aid also advocates for policies that stabilize farm income and protect rural communities.

How your gift helps: More hotline counselors, better referrals to local services, and outreach that reaches farmers before stress becomes a crisis.

2. American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP)

Website: https://afsp.org/

AFSP is the leading national nonprofit focused on saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide. AFSP supports research, education, and community programs across all 50 states. Many chapters work with rural partners to reduce stigma, train community gatekeepers, and expand prevention programs that fit farm culture. AFSP also offers survivor support for families after a loss.

How your gift helps: Evidence based education, advocacy for better access to mental health care, and training for people who may be first to notice a crisis.

3. National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)

Website: https://nami.org/

NAMI is the largest grassroots mental health organization in the United States. It provides peer led support groups, classes like Family to Family, and a national HelpLine that offers information, resources, and encouragement. Many NAMI affiliates partner with extension services and farm bureaus to tailor programs for agricultural communities.

How your gift helps: Expanded Helpline hours, more local support groups, and outreach that reaches isolated counties.

4. AgriSafe Network

Website: https://www.agrisafe.org/

AgriSafe focuses on the health and safety of farmers, ranchers, and agricultural workers. Their Total Farmer Health model treats mental health as part of overall farm safety. Programs include trainings for clinicians and ag professionals, webinars on stress management, and telehealth friendly tools designed for rural life. AgriSafe also provides guidance on safe storage of firearms and medications as part of suicide prevention.

How your gift helps: More trainings for trusted rural providers, practical tools farmers can use today, and prevention resources that fit the realities of farm work.

5. Rural Health Information Hub (RHIhub)

Website: https://www.ruralhealthinfo.org/

RHIhub is a national clearinghouse for rural health knowledge. It offers curated toolkits, program models, and funding alerts that help local leaders build effective mental health and suicide prevention programs. The site includes a dedicated section on rural mental health that highlights strategies that work in farm country, from telebehavioral health to mobile crisis response.

How your gift helps: Wider access to proven program models, technical assistance for small towns with limited staff, and awareness of new grants that can fund local solutions.

How to Choose Where to Donate

Look for clear program descriptions and recent impact reports.

Check if the charity partners with extension services, farm bureaus, or local clinics.

Consider monthly giving to support steady services through the farming cycle.

If your company serves agriculture, explore sponsorships or match programs.

What Policy Makers Can Do

Expand broadband and telehealth reimbursement in rural counties.

Increase funding for loan deferrals and disaster relief tied to mental health outreach.

Support training for primary care and veterinary clinics on suicide prevention.

Promote safe storage campaigns that reduce access to lethal means during a crisis.

Myths and Facts

Myth: Talking about suicide puts the idea in someone’s head.

Fact: Asking directly and with care can reduce risk and open a path to help.

Myth: Strong people do not get depressed.

Fact: Depression is a health condition. It can affect anyone, including the toughest people you know.

Myth: If someone seems better, the danger is gone.

Fact: Risk can rise again, especially during times of transition. Keep checking in.

A Simple Action Plan You Can Start Today

Save 988 in your phone.

Share one resource from this article with a farmer you know.

Schedule a check in with a neighbor during harvest.

Make a small donation to one of the five organizations listed above.

Post the county extension mental health contact at your farm, shop, or church.

Key Resources

Many U.S. veterans live in the shadows, facing challenges with jobs, housing, and mental health while going unseen. Discover why support matters and explore five trusted charities helping invisible veterans rebuild their lives with dignity and purpose

The post How to Support Invisible Veterans in the USA first appeared on Best of High Impact Philanthropy and Donation.

Many veterans struggle out of sight with jobs, housing, and health. Learn what works and support five proven nonprofits. Direct links included, no tracking.

A quiet reality too many Americans miss

Millions of veterans return to civilian life and disappear from public view. Some do not wear unit hats or attend parades. Some do not connect with the Department of Veterans Affairs right away. Others try to shoulder trauma, chronic pain, or isolation without asking for help. These are the veterans people often call invisible. They are neighbors, co workers, students, and parents. They want the same things everyone wants. Stable work. Affordable housing. A sense of purpose. Strong relationships. Respect.

Many do well after service, and that is important to say. But a significant number face challenges that are easy to miss. Transition takes time. Benefits can be confusing. Asking for help can feel risky. Pride and confidentiality matter. When support is not visible or easy to access, people slip through the cracks.

This guide explains why some veterans become invisible, the signs that someone may be struggling, what effective support looks like, and the nonprofits that are moving the needle. All charity links below go straight to official sites with no referral tags.

Immediate help is available. Call or text 988 and press 1 for the Veterans Crisis Line, or visit https://www.veteranscrisisline.net/ for chat support.

Why veterans fall out of view

Navigation is hard

Benefits can feel like a maze. Eligibility rules vary by discharge status and service history. Deadlines and paperwork create friction. If a veteran had a bad first experience, they may stop trying.

Health needs are complex

Some veterans manage post traumatic stress, moral injury, traumatic brain injury, or chronic pain. Others carry visible injuries that require ongoing care. Co occurring issues are common. Mental health, sleep, and substance use problems often overlap.

Employment and identity

Military skills do not always map cleanly to civilian job postings. Translating experience into a resume takes practice. The loss of unit identity can create a hole that work alone does not fill.

Housing and financial strain

A rent increase or medical bill can push a household into crisis. Veterans have higher risk of homelessness when they lack family support or live in high cost markets.

Stigma and silence

Many veterans do not want to be labeled as broken or helpless. Some worry that disclosing a condition will hurt job prospects. Others prefer not to talk about service at all. The result is less help and more isolation.

Signs a veteran you know may be struggling

Big changes in mood, sleep, or appetite

Withdrawal from friends, classes, or teams

Missed work or repeated lateness

Heavy drinking or new drug use

Talk about feeling like a burden

Sudden sale or storage of personal items

Eviction notices or unstable housing

Avoiding medical or counseling appointments

If you notice several signs, reach out in a calm and direct way. Try this: I care about you. I have noticed you are carrying a lot. Would you be open to talking to a counselor or calling the Veterans Crisis Line together?

What works when support actually works

Trust first

Veterans respond to credible messengers. Peers, veteran service officers, and clinicians who understand military culture can bridge the gap. Confidentiality is key.

One door that opens many doors

Warm handoffs beat cold referrals. The best programs combine benefits navigation, job coaching, housing support, and mental health care. Do not make people retell their story ten times.

Purpose and community

Volunteering, continued service, and leadership roles help restore identity. When veterans are part of something bigger, outcomes improve.

Skills translation

Resume coaching, certification programs, and apprenticeships connect military skills to civilian careers. Employers need help here too.

Family support

Strong relationships protect health. Programs that include spouses and children reduce stress at home and improve long term outcomes.

Five nonprofits bringing invisible veterans into the light

Each organization below has a clear mission and proven track record. Links are direct and untracked. Where possible, we note what your gift makes possible.

Disabled American Veterans (DAV)

Website: https://www.dav.org/

DAV is a congressionally chartered nonprofit that has supported veterans and families for more than 100 years. The core of DAV’s work is access. Volunteer drivers take veterans to medical appointments. Benefits advocates file claims and appeals. Mobile service offices visit rural communities where help is scarce. DAV also connects veterans to employment resources and helps wounded warriors adapt homes and vehicles.

Your support expands benefits counseling, increases free rides to care, and funds outreach in places where veterans might otherwise go unseen. If a veteran in your life needs help filing a claim, start with DAV.

Team Rubicon

Website: https://teamrubiconusa.org/

Team Rubicon mobilizes veterans to serve again through disaster response and humanitarian missions. The model is simple and powerful. Veterans bring leadership, logistics, and grit to communities hit by hurricanes, floods, and fires. In return, volunteers gain purpose, connection, and new skills. The network includes civilian volunteers as well, which builds strong bonds across communities.

Donations support training, equipment, and rapid deployments. Many invisible veterans find their footing here. Service gives meaning. Meaning builds health.

Wounded Warrior Project

Website: https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/

Wounded Warrior Project focuses on the long term recovery of post 9 11 veterans with visible and invisible injuries. Programs include mental health care, peer support groups, adaptive sports, and financial education. The Warrior Care Network partners with leading medical centers to provide intensive outpatient treatment for post traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury.

Gifts help expand counseling capacity, travel stipends for care, and family programs that keep households strong during recovery.

Hire Heroes USA

Website: https://www.hireheroesusa.org/

Hire Heroes USA is all about jobs that last. The team provides one on one career coaching, resume and LinkedIn support, mock interviews, and direct connections to employers who are serious about veteran talent. They also support military spouses, who often face frequent moves and gaps in work history.

Donations fund more coaching hours, virtual workshops, and job fairs. When a veteran secures a quality job, stability follows. Fewer people fall through the cracks.

Student Veterans of America

Website: https://studentveterans.org/

Student Veterans of America supports more than 1,500 campus chapters nationwide. Chapters create peer networks, study groups, and leadership opportunities that ease the transition into higher education. The national team advocates for policies that protect GI Bill benefits and improve data on student outcomes.

Your gift strengthens campus chapters, scholarships, and research that helps colleges understand what veterans need to graduate and thrive.

Practical ways to help right now

For friends and family

Save the Veterans Crisis Line contact and share it: https://www.veteranscrisisline.net/

Offer specific help. A ride to an appointment. Childcare during an interview. Help with forms.

Ask directly if someone is thinking about suicide. It is safe to ask and it can open a door to help.

For employers

Adopt fair and transparent hiring practices. Use skills based job descriptions and consider military experience as equivalent training where appropriate.

Train managers on military culture and invisible disabilities. Small adjustments can unlock strong performance.

Create employee resource groups for veterans and spouses. Community improves retention.

For campuses

Support your local SVA chapter. Fund a quiet study room and peer mentors.

Make transfer credit evaluations transparent. Recognize military training where possible.

Provide short term emergency grants. Small dollars at the right time prevent dropouts.

For communities and local leaders

Host Veterans Day events that focus on year round support, not just ceremonies.

Fund transit passes or ride programs to VA and community clinics.

Back housing first strategies for homeless veterans, paired with wraparound care.

Policy ideas that scale what works

Expand outreach for veterans who do not enroll in VA care within the first year after discharge.

Frequently asked questions

What does discharge status mean for benefits?
Honorable and general under honorable conditions usually qualify for most VA benefits. Other statuses can limit access. A benefits advocate at DAV can review options and help with upgrades when appropriate.

What if a veteran says they do not want help?
Respect autonomy and keep the door open. Share resources and check in later. If there is immediate risk of harm, call 911 and request a crisis intervention trained response when possible.

Are there local options beyond national charities?
Yes. County veteran service officers, state departments of veterans affairs, and community based nonprofits can help. The national groups in this guide often refer to local partners.

Is it safe to ask about suicide?
Yes. Asking shows care and does not plant the idea. Use clear language, listen, and connect the person to the Veterans Crisis Line at 988, press 1 or to a trusted clinician.

The path forward

Invisible does not mean unreachable. With the right mix of trust, practical help, and purpose, veterans who are struggling can and do recover. Jobs, housing, and health are the anchors. Family, peers, and service are the lines that hold. The five charities in this guide do not work in isolation. They build bridges to benefits, to education, to treatment, and to community. That is how lives change.

If you want a place to start today, pick one action. Share the Crisis Line. Ask a veteran about their goals this year. Offer help with a resume. Make a donation to one of these organizations:

The most pressing global challenges always have to do with war, poverty, natural disasters, and other environmental issues. These problems are often linked, with natural disasters destroying homes and property, displacing millions, and bringing poverty, lack of good resources and healthcare, and disease, or armed conflicts leading to poverty and human trafficking and everything else mentioned earlier in the sentence.

In fact, there are some places in this world that are more vulnerable to disasters, poverty, and disease, such as developing countries in Africa and the Middle East, since they do not have as many resources as more developed countries like Canada and the United States. Armed conflicts are also an example of a disaster, since the disaster is faced by civilians: death, displacement, destruction of property, and, sometimes, no proper food, water, shelter, or healthcare until organizations such as UNICEF, World Vision, and the Red Cross can deport teams to the location.

Examples of natural disasters may include tsunamis, earthquakes, floods, volcanic eruptions, and anything else caused by nature that causes the destruction of a city and limits resources, food, shelter, and emergency aid to help the place recover. Examples of man-made disasters are armed conflicts, where civilians are often the victims of the disaster if the conflict takes place in a city, for example several battles in World War II.

Today, most natural disasters have the greatest impacts on developing countries, where it will be harder for the economy to recover and for citizens to rebuild their homes and property and at the same time receive medical attention, a temporary shelter, and food, and as a result, people stay in poverty and natural disasters such as floods, landslides, and tsunamis can bring diseases through dirty soil and water.

This article will highlight ten non-profit charities that pay close attention to these issues and the cycle of disasters, lack of resources, and poverty. The ten organizations are unique in their goals and where they operate: some operate worldwide, in certain continents, or in certain countries, and are headquartered in various places around the world.

They have different missions and work with different age groups. Some might only focus on man-made disasters, while others might only focus on poverty (since disasters aren’t the only cause of poverty out there). Regardless, every organization has its unique values and aims, and this article will highlight how they achieved worldwide recognition for their efforts.

This can prove that when internationally-operating organizations work together with local organizations, we can succeed in providing disaster relief, healthcare, and poverty relief for everyone.
The post Top 10 Charities for Poverty and Disaster Relief Worldwide first appeared on Best of High Impact Philanthropy and Donation.

Have you ever wondered why some places in the world are peaceful while others struggle with violence and injustice? The answer often lies in the strength of their institutions—like governments, courts, and police forces—that are meant to keep people safe and ensure fairness. In the USA, several non-profit organizations work tirelessly to promote peace, justice, and strong institutions. These groups help protect human rights, ensure equal treatment under the law, and support peaceful communities. This article will introduce you to ten non-profits making a big difference in these important areas.

Peace, justice, and strong institutions are crucial for any society to thrive. Without them, communities can become unstable, and people can suffer from violence, discrimination, and corruption. In many places, weak institutions fail to protect the most vulnerable, leading to widespread inequality and injustice. For example, when the justice system doesn’t work fairly, some people might get away with crimes while others are unfairly punished. Similarly, when institutions are corrupt, those in power may abuse their positions, leading to a lack of trust in the government and social unrest.

The United Nations recognizes the importance of peace, justice, and strong institutions, including them in their Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals emphasize that for a society to be truly sustainable, it must ensure that everyone has access to justice and that institutions are strong enough to maintain peace and fairness. In the USA, various non-profits are working to address these issues, helping to build a society where everyone can feel safe and treated with respect.

Promoting peace, justice, and strong institutions is essential for the well-being of any society. When people feel secure and trust their institutions, they are more likely to contribute positively to their communities. In the USA, many non-profits are leading the charge in advocating for fair treatment, fighting corruption, and ensuring that justice is accessible to all. These organizations work on a range of issues, from protecting civil rights and promoting transparency in government to supporting peaceful conflict resolution.

Current initiatives include campaigns to reform the criminal justice system, efforts to reduce gun violence, and programs that support victims of injustice. These non-profits also play a critical role in educating the public about their rights and advocating for policies that promote fairness and equality. By working on these issues, these organizations help to create a society where everyone has the opportunity to live in peace and pursue their dreams without fear of injustice.

Despite the progress made by these non-profits, there are still many challenges in promoting peace, justice, and strong institutions. One major challenge is the persistence of systemic inequality, which means that some groups of people continue to face discrimination and unfair treatment. Additionally, corruption within institutions can undermine trust and make it difficult to achieve real change. These issues are often deeply rooted in society, making them hard to address.

However, there are also many opportunities to make a positive impact. Increased awareness of social justice issues, especially among young people, provides a chance to build momentum for change. Technology and social media can also play a powerful role in spreading awareness and mobilizing people to take action. By supporting non-profits that are dedicated to these causes, individuals can contribute to the ongoing effort to create a more just and peaceful society.

American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is famous for defending and preserving the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in the United States by the Constitution and laws of the United States. The ACLU is involved in nearly every major civil rights issue in the country, from fighting for freedom of speech to protecting the rights of immigrants. Their legal team is one of the most prominent and powerful, often taking on cases that go all the way to the Supreme Court.

The ACLU operates through a network of local affiliates that address issues specific to their regions, while also engaging in national advocacy and litigation. Their programs focus on a wide range of civil liberties, including voting rights, criminal justice reform, and LGBTQ+ rights. By challenging unjust laws and practices in court, the ACLU ensures that everyone in the country, regardless of race, religion, or political belief, is treated fairly under the law.

The ACLU’s target donors include individuals who are passionate about civil rights, as well as foundations that support social justice. They rely on donations to fund their legal cases and advocacy efforts. The ACLU’s impact is felt across the nation as they continue to push for a more just and equitable society where everyone’s rights are respected.

Equal Justice Initiative (EJI)

The Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) is widely recognized for its work in ending mass incarceration and excessive punishment in the United States, particularly as it relates to racial injustice. Founded by Bryan Stevenson in 1989, EJI provides legal representation to individuals who have been wrongly convicted, unfairly sentenced, or abused in state jails and prisons. They are especially known for their work in challenging the death penalty and addressing the treatment of children prosecuted as adults.

Getting a good job and having a strong economy are really important for everyone. But many people struggle to find jobs that pay well or offer a chance to move up in their careers. This is a big deal because it affects not just individuals but our whole community and economy. Luckily, there are many non-profits out there working hard to help improve job conditions and support economic growth. In this article, we’ll look at ten non-profits that are making a difference in these areas and how their efforts are helping people across the USA.

Having a decent job means more than just getting a paycheck. It means earning fair wages, working in safe conditions, and having chances to advance in your career. Economic growth helps businesses succeed and creates more job opportunities. But many Americans still face issues like low wages and job insecurity. Things like economic downturns, changes in technology, and educational gaps make these problems worse. Fixing these issues is important for making sure everyone has a fair chance to succeed.

Addressing job quality and economic growth is crucial for improving people’s lives and reducing inequality. Some non-profits focus on changing laws to make work fairer, while others offer direct help like job training and placement services. These efforts help people find good jobs and support a healthier economy. By improving job conditions and supporting economic development, these organizations are making a real difference.

There are still challenges when it comes to ensuring decent work and economic growth. Issues like low wages and job instability can be tough to tackle. However, there are also opportunities to improve the situation. For example, better education and job training can help people adapt to new job markets. Supporting policies that promote fair wages and safe working conditions can also lead to positive change. By addressing these challenges, we can work towards a better job market and economic stability for everyone.

Every day, animals lose their habitats, are killed when human activity harms an ecosystem, are verbally and physically abused by humans, and are taken from their natural habitats in the wild to be raised domestically and treated cruelly and eventually killed for fur coats, organ trafficking, or food or other commercial services. According to the Oxford Dictionary, an animal is “a living organism that feeds on organic matter.”

Various animals include cats, dogs, humans, bacteria, horses, whales, crabs, and roughly anything else that eats food, respirates, and reproduces. But take humans away, and although humans fit the meaning of ‘taken from their natural habitats’ through human trafficking, they are the dominant species on Earth, and although humans deserve exactly the same rights, the main focus in this article is highlighting ten organizations that advocate for the rights of animals (aside from humans), because it is necessary for humans to be able to co-exist peacefully with animals to improve our society.

There are over 10 million non-profit charities in the world (and that number doesn’t even count things like high school charities). A good number of those charities advocate for animal rights, climate change, humane treatment of domestic animals, and rights of nature and the environment in general. But these issues are often overshadowed by issues that have to do with human rights, like racism, gender equality, domestic workers’ rights, voting rights, or criminal justice.

Some do not realize the cruelty many domesticated animals endure every day, how much wildlife lose their habitats to deforestation and human activity, how animals are abused endlessly in places like circuses and entertainment, and how many farm animals are treated in an inhumane way before being eventually killed for food or fur. Some of the charities that will be mentioned in this article have been tirelessly raising awareness about animal rights, partnering with companies around the world to rescue animals, doing scientific research, and preserving wild habitats and protecting endangered species.

Some are recognized internationally for their efforts to change policies and laws in several countries and for exposing harsh truths about companies and industries in different countries, such as exposing the cruel treatment of horses in Spain’s horse meat industry by Animal Equality. This is only one small example of the work done by the ten organizations that will be recognized in this article.

Friends of Animals

Founded in 1957, the Friends of Animals organization ‘has been working to free animals from cruelty and institutionalized exploitation’ according to their website. They are headquartered in various places all over America, and work internationally to educate and advocate for the rights of all animals, whether wild or domestic, free and protect animals from exploitation, and also address the biggest contributors to climate change – deforestation, fossil fuels, and agriculture. Throughout the course of their work, they have started legal initiatives as well as policy and legislative outreach to ban fur sales, and have rescued and cared for more than 300 animals in San Antonio who were exploited for commercial reasons. They have lately been fighting the Bureau of Land Management for the rights of wild horses.

The Humane League

Founded in 2005 in Philadelphia, the Humane League is a non-profit organization whose mission is to support the rights of animals abused on factory farms and raised for food. They have since then grown as an organization to operate globally, running campaigns, confronting companies across the entire food industry, freeing more than 10M chickens, and even getting companies like Pepsi, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, and more to enact welfare policies that protect animals.

In 2016, the Humane League founded the Open Wing Alliance (OWA), a global partnership to end the abuse of chickens, and they have also distributed more than $8M to OWA partners worldwide. Today they are one of the biggest non-profits in America.

Sea Shepherd Conservation Society

Founded in 1977, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society operates worldwide from Washington State, USA, and Melbourne, Australia, with a mission to protect and conserve the world’s oceans from human activity such as illegal fishing and whaling. Their main tactics are direct service, such as intercepting illegal fishing or whaling expeditions. Although they have been criticized by those encouraging whaling operations or illegal fishing as ‘attacking,’ they strive to protect all wildlife from illegal human activity at sea with no exceptions.

Compassion in World Farming

Founded in 1967, Compassion in World Farming has a mission to use campaigns to end all factory farming practices worldwide. Unlike some other organizations using campaigns, Compassion in World Farming uses research and public awareness initiatives to advocate for farm animals to be treated with respect before they are killed. Some of their advocacy initiatives have exposed cruelty to hens, pigs, sheep, and many other farm animals on certain farms.

Their active campaigning has led to celebrity endorsements and recognition by BBC Radio 4, where they won the BBC 4 Food and Farming Award for the best campaigner. Since 95% of all chickens in factories are treated inhumanely, the organization started one of their most notable campaigns called the Better Chicken Initiative, in 2014. Compassion in World Farming operates in the UK and envision a world where all animals on farms are treated with respect.

Born Free Foundation

Founded in 1984, the Born Free Foundation serves worldwide with a headquarters in Sussex, England, with a mission to rescue wild animals from exploitation, protect those in their natural habitats, and conserve endangered species and ecosystems. They campaign for a future where animals and humans coexist peacefully and animals do not feel threatened or face extinction. They are a leading wildlife charity in the UK that promotes their initiative Compassionate Conservation to protect natural habitats and ensure the survival of endangered animals. The Born Free Foundation either supports or operates a number of conservation projects worldwide, such as the Orangutan Foundation International in Indonesia and the Arcturos Bears Foundation in Greece. They have influenced many British wildlife policies and assisted in the modifying of several legislative measures. They work with many corporate sponsors and partners across the world.

World Wildlife Fund

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) was founded in 1961 and is currently headquartered in Switzerland. It was founded by a group of people who were passionate about protecting wildlife and natural habitats threatened by human development. Since then, they have been recognized by Prince Philip, helped operate the British National Appeal, started the College of African Wildlife Management, and way more. Their mission is to build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature, and their goal is to conserve and restore biodiversity, reduce carbon footprints, and ensure that sustainable natural resources are used ethically. Their values include courage, integrity, respect, and collaboration, and these values are shared throughout the whole organization and all their partnerships. They operate in over 100 countries through advocacy, education, research, and direct service.

Humane Society International

The Humane Society International (HSI) was founded in 1991 and currently operates in Washington, DC. They are dedicated to advancing the welfare of animals around the world, improve the bond between humans and animals, and raise awareness about animal cruelty in all forms. They focus on issues such as abusive conditions for farm animals, illegal trading, illegal fishing and poaching of marine animals, fur trades, and animals as science experiences. HSI operates in more than 50 countries and strives to ethically find long-term solutions to animal cruelty. One way they have done this is when they have assisted in changing government policies, international treaties, and trade agreements that affect animals. HSI supports NGO and governmental efforts in the protection of wildlife. They are active participants in international organizations such as the International Whaling Commision, the International Union for Conservation of Nature, and more.

Animal Equality

Animal Equality operates in 8 countries from an international headquarters in Los Angeles, California. The organization was founded in 2006, and their mission is to reduce animal cruelty and change people’s perceptions on exploited animals through education and advocacy. They also conduct investigations, legal support, and spread awareness through public campaigns to promote veganism and more humane treatment of animals, specifically exploited animals or animals living on farms. Some notable achievements include exposing secret factory farms using 360 degree cameras called iAnimal, which has been recognized by many top US universities and celebrities, organizing a public hearing at the Sao Paulo Legislative Assembly that talks about the killing of male chicks and calves in the dairy industry, and exposing the cruel treatment and killing of horses in Spain’s horse meat industry. These are just a few of the many internationally recognized achievements and milestones Animal Equality has accomplished.

International Fund for Animal Welfare

The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) was founded in 1969 with a goal to stop commercial marine life hunting. It is one of the largest animal rights advocacy organizations in the world, operating and having projects in more than 40 countries from a headquarters in New Brunswick, Canada. Their mission is to spread awareness about commercial hunting for seal pups and make the oceans healthier and safer. Alongside their main mission of conserving sea life, IFAW’s other projects include reducing ocean noise, saving animal lives in natural disasters, rescuing and protecting wild animals from exploitation, and habitat conservation. They do this through direct service, advocacy, and education.

Four Paws International

Founded in 1988, Four Paws International envisions a world where humans treat animals with respect and kindness. They have rescued many animals living in cruel conditions and protecting others in their natural habitats. Aside from their global headquarters in Vienna, Austria, Four Paws operates in 15 other countries as well as various sanctuaries around the world for rescued animals in 11 other countries. Their mission is “to achieve and establish changes in politics, society, and the economy that will benefit animals,” according to their website. They do this through direct service, research, and international lobbying and advocacy in order to change consumer behaviour, laws and policies, and form partnerships worldwide.

Conclusion

The work done by these non-profit organizations addresses the many issues that must be solved to achieve animal rights, such as cruel treatment of domestic animals, killing for commercial use, illegal marine activity, and destroying biodiversity. These organizations operate worldwide, and each one has individual focuses and skills used to solve these various issues. As stated in the descriptions, all of these organizations have worldwide partnerships in order to spread their missions and advocacy around the world.
The post Top 10 Charities for Animal Rights Worldwide first appeared on Best of High Impact Philanthropy and Donation.

It refers to the exploitation of any individual for personal – the trafficker’s gain, for example domestic servitude or forced labour, or for commercial gain, for example child labour or sex trafficking.

Human trafficking can happen to anyone, regardless of race or age, or anywhere, whether in developed countries like Canada and the US or in more vulnerable communities in Asia and Africa. Human trafficking is usually overlooked due to its illegality in most countries and how many people think slavery in developed countries was abolished after the American Civil War.

Slavery rates are also misrecorded, an example being the UK government only reporting half of all slavery rates in the country. This article will highlight ten non-profits and charities that rescue and empower human trafficking victims, educate communities, and advocate for change in many different parts of the world.

Charitable giving is as diverse and expansive as the United States, spanning many causes, demographics, and geographies. It is a testament to the spirit of generosity, empathy, and social responsibility embedded in the fabric of American society and support for social change is evident. American philanthropy is rooted in a long history of public and private benevolence. It is a testament to the profound impact individual and collective action can have in addressing challenges and improving the lives of others. In 2020, according to Giving USA, Americans donated $471.44 billion to charitable causes, demonstrating the scale and magnitude of the nation’s philanthropic endeavours. As the country grappled with a global pandemic, economic uncertainty, and a renewed struggle for racial justice, this outpouring of support was a lifeline for countless individuals, communities, and organizations.

These philanthropic endeavours have tangible impacts, providing essential services, fostering innovation, and driving policy change. Moreover, charitable giving allows us to express our values, aspirations, and vision for the world. It empowers us to directly impact the causes that resonate with our beliefs and experiences.
Despite the spotlight often placed on larger, well-known charities, it is crucial to recognize the meaningful work carried out by lesser-known organizations. These smaller charities, continually operating on limited resources, are entrenched in their communities and specific causes. They provide nuanced and tailored solutions, often filling gaps larger entities overlook. Their work is a testament to the power of targeted, local efforts in driving substantial change. In many cases, smaller charities can adapt quickly, innovate freely, and operate with a level of authenticity that resonates deeply with their constituents and donors. Each dollar donated to these organizations can significantly impact, providing essential funding for their programs and initiatives.

Moreover, supporting smaller organizations can foster a closer connection between donors, the charity, and the cause. Donors can see firsthand the impact of their contributions and are often more engaged in the charity’s mission. Engagement can foster shared purpose, further amplifying the impact of charitable giving. Charitable giving in the United States is a powerful testament to the collective capacity for empathy, generosity, and action. Each donation contributes to a shared endeavour to make a positive difference in the world, from global health initiatives to local arts programs.
